Oakland Unified School District | Future Leader in Medicine & Science Spotlight - Derek Jones Jr. #mondaymotivation #oaklandstorybank

Today, almost 1/3 of students nationwide leave high school without the skills they need to succeed in college, have a fulfilling career and/or earn a family-supporting living.

Sooooo...what’s being done to address this?
•••
For today’s #mondaymotivation I’m excited to highlight one of the programs Oakland Unified School District has created to help students succeed and specifically break into the medical field - Medicine & Science (MIMS) in the following video clip.
•••
Derek Jones, Jr. - one of Oakland Tech’s brightest future leaders in Medicine and Science shares how his background, his family, and his community have shaped his life and future interests. Spending time with Derek was so motivating and refreshing. So my challenge to my loves out there: I encourage each of you to take some time away from your daily hustle to go back and volunteer for 1 day at a local school this year - I promise you it will be worth it!

These students need us and they need help telling their stories! Someone reached out to me to use my platform to highlight some of these students breaking into difficult industries. But outside of having this platform I would want to do this because these students and their stories personally resonate with me when I think about my own journey. And as @weloveoakland pointed out “a child educated only at school is an uneducated child”. These unique after school programs are another part of the village that’s STILL needed to raise our children. Disclaimer: this is the first clip I’ve created like this and my video skills are a work in progress. But I hope you walk away with the same feelings I did after I met Derek - #inspired and #hopeful!
